Darcy glanced over his shoulder. Fitzwilliam strolled with Miss Bennet, a moon-eyed expression on his face. When had Fitzwilliam worn such a Bingley-like countenance?

“Your cousin appears well pleased with himself,” Miss Elizabeth said softly.

How he enjoyed her arched brow. “Yes. I do not recall him ever appearing so…at ease in the company of a lady.”

“I believe my sister finds pleasure in his company as well.”

While Darcy appreciated the assurance of Miss Bennet’s feelings for Fitzwilliam, a more significant question remained unanswered. Did Miss Elizabeth find pleasure in his company?

“Would I be impolitic to observe you do not appear to enjoy the company of Miss Caroline?” Her eyes glimmered with a hint of mischief.

He discarded the first two, somber responses that flashed through his mind. “Yes, quite impolitic.”

She smiled! What joy in making a beautiful woman smile.

“She is an old acquaintance of yours?”

“No, I attended school with Bingley. He only recently introduced me to his sisters.”

The brilliancy faded from her countenance. What had stolen the light from her eyes?

“Please allow me again to offer my apologies for any offense Miss Caroline may have caused.”

“It is her responsibility alone, not yours.”

“You are most understanding.”

“Perhaps not so understanding as self-serving.” She laughed under her breath. “With younger sisters such as mine—”

“They are quite pleasant society.”

“My youngest sister is full young to be in company, especially with her lively temperament and even more lively temper…” She offered a wry smile.

“Say no more. My sister is close in age to Miss Lydia. Hers is a rather trying age. I should like you to meet her. She has few young women in her circles, and I think she would benefit by your acquaintance.”

“I am honored. I would be delighted to meet her should the opportunity arise.”

“She is in London with my aunt. Perhaps I might arrange a visit yet this summer.”

“She would enjoy the companionship of Miss Caroline?” She arched an eyebrow.

Darcy shook his head. “Ah, no, I only considered your friendship. I quite forgot there were any other ladies in Hertfordshire.”

A pretty blush rose on her dimpled cheeks.
